Prickly Poppy, A Utah native plant

This painting is part of a spiritual journey. This poppy thrives in a harsh desert environment. It’s robust defense system (prickles and irritating sap) protects it from predators. It also gives back to the ecosystem by providing ample pollen and nectar to pollinators, such as this native bee.

A few years ago, I began to search for something to fill the hole in my heart. I was surrounded by confusing and conflicting messages about who I am supposed to be, and it was causing me emotional distress. I leaned in to the discomfort in an effort to grow, and I came away with a greater peace than I had expected. I can be both nurturing and powerful. I can protect myself from harm, and give generously to the people and causes I care about. I don’t have to choose between two apparently opposing things, I can be both
