Sunflower In Bloom
Helianthus annus
Watercolor on goatskin vellum
approx 5×7” in 8×10” frame
This is the common sunflower. There are four paintings depicting different stages of flowering, from bud to developing seeds. Each one is painted on goatskin vellum scraps in watercolor. The small rectangles are vellum tabs used to mount the vellum to the mat along with waxed thread.
Sunflowers were used by native peoples as food (seeds and petals are edible), medicine, and dye.
