Sego Lilies and Grass
Calochortus nuttallii and Schizachyrium scoparium
Watercolor on Paper
11×14” in 16×20” frame
Utah’s state flower in bud and bloom, and an unusually colored Little Bluestem grass.
The Sego Lily is Utah’s state flower and is not only historically significant, but it is one of Utah’s most eye-catching native flowers. When early settlers faced starvation, native tribes taught them how to survive. Sego Lilly bulbs were an important food source during this difficult time. Sego Lilies are rather fussy about where they grow, and do not transplant well. If you are lucky enough to see one, take a picture and leave the flower.
