Red Elderberry

Sambucus racemosa

This shrub is native to the Rocky Mountains. It grows in various places throughout Utah. I have found that wild game leave this plant alone until the berries are ripe, then they eat the berries, leaves until a bunch of bare sticks remain.

The dissections in graphite are from left to right: flower inflorescence, enlarged flower, enlarged berry, transverse section of a berry, and enlarged seeds.
